What South African applicants need to confirm before applying
The eligibility question that matters most for South Africans right now is not whether a program will take you. It is whether your own citizenship paperwork is already settled.
- South Africa's Citizenship Act, Section 6(1)(a), used to cause automatic loss of South African citizenship for anyone who took a foreign nationality without first getting a Certificate of Retention. The Constitutional Court declared this unconstitutional on 6 May 2025. If you lost citizenship this way, you are now treated as never having lost it, but the Department of Home Affairs' administrative process for updating records was still being finalised as this was researched. Confirm current DHA guidance before assuming your own documentation is in order.
- Because the ruling is recent, expect some inconsistency at ports of entry, banks and Home Affairs counters until internal guidance fully catches up. Keep your naturalisation certificate and any prior retention correspondence on hand.
- None of the four Caribbean programs bans South African applicants.
- South African exchange control rules require using your annual foreign investment allowance, or SARB approval for larger transfers. Plan the funding route with an authorised dealer bank well ahead of any program deadline.
- A second passport or foreign residence permit does not by itself end South African tax residency. That requires a separate, formal cessation-of-tax-residency process.
