Your realistic options: residency first, citizenship only if you mean it

We split the table below on purpose. The residency routes, UAE, Portugal and Greece, are foreign residence permits. They sit alongside your Indonesian passport and do not touch your citizenship at all. The citizenship route, Caribbean investment programs, is a different transaction under Indonesian law: taking it ends your Indonesian citizenship the moment it is granted.

For most Indonesian applicants who want international mobility without an identity question attached, the residency routes are the honest starting point. Caribbean citizenship stays available for applicants who have thought through the trade and decided it is worth it, often for reasons that have nothing to do with travel freedom.

The fine print for Indonesian applicants

None of this is a workaround. It is what Indonesian law actually says, and what to check before you decide either way.

• Indonesia's Citizenship Law No. 12/2006 permits limited dual citizenship only for minors under 18, mainly children of mixed marriages or born abroad. An adult who voluntarily acquires a foreign citizenship, including through Caribbean investment, automatically loses Indonesian citizenship under Article 23.
• This is exactly why a golden visa, a foreign residence permit rather than a new citizenship, is the structurally cleaner choice for most Indonesian applicants who want to keep their Indonesian passport.
• If you decide to proceed with Caribbean citizenship anyway, treat it as a considered decision to change citizenship, not an extra passport. Get independent Indonesian legal advice on the exact loss mechanics and on what it means for any children's citizenship before you apply.
• None of the four Caribbean programs on this site currently bans Indonesian applicants on nationality grounds.
• Indonesia's currency and capital-transfer reporting rules, set by Bank Indonesia, apply to amounts in the hundreds of thousands of dollars. Plan the funding route with your bank well ahead of any program's payment deadline.
• A foreign golden visa residence permit does not by itself change your Indonesian tax residency. That is a separate determination under Indonesian tax law.
• If you already hold dual nationality through a foreign parent, confirm your actual status before assuming the adult single-citizenship rule applies to you without exception.

How the process runs with us
