Golden Visa Options for Chinese Citizens

Updated September 2026 · Henley Passport Index, January 2026 data

golden visa for chinese citizens

A Chinese passport ranks 55th of roughly 199 on the Henley Passport Index, January 2026 edition, with visa-free or visa-on-arrival access to about 82 destinations. Chinese nationals are historically the largest single client group across almost every program on this site, Caribbean and golden visa alike, which tells you the demand is real. It does not tell you which route is the cleaner legal fit, and for China those are two different questions.

China's Nationality Law does not recognise dual nationality. In strict law, a Chinese citizen who settles abroad and voluntarily takes a foreign nationality, including a Caribbean passport by investment, automatically loses Chinese nationality. Enforcement is inconsistent in practice, but we present this as a real legal fact to plan around, not a footnote to skip. See our nationality hub for how other nationalities handle this differently.

Your realistic options: residency avoids the conflict, citizenship raises it

This is why Portugal and Greece in particular have stayed popular with Chinese applicants even as Caribbean citizenship has grown more expensive since 2024: a golden visa is a foreign residence permit, not a competing nationality, so the automatic-loss provision never comes into play. Caribbean citizenship remains open and unbanned for Chinese nationals, and Grenada specifically appeals to applicants who want the US E-2 investor treaty angle, but it is worth naming plainly what that route means under Chinese law before you choose it.

Figures below are a 2026 market range. Confirm the exact number for your family size before committing to either path.

China: residency routes (avoid the conflict) vs citizenship routes (raises it), 2026 budget
ProgramTypeAll-in budget (USD)What it means under Chinese law
Portugal Golden VisaResidencyFrom about $550,000 (€500,000 fund)No conflict. Historically the most popular EU route for mainland Chinese applicants
Greece Golden VisaResidencyFrom about $270,000 (€250,000 conversion route) up to $850,000+ (Zone A)No conflict. Lower entry point than Portugal via the conversion route
UAE Golden VisaResidencyAbout $545,000 (AED 2,000,000 property)No conflict. A regional base with established Chinese business and banking ties
GrenadaCitizenship$235,000, family of 4Triggers automatic loss in strict law; chosen mainly for the US E-2 treaty angle

The fine print for Chinese applicants

None of the seven programs bans Chinese nationals. The real work is understanding the citizenship law question and planning around China's capital controls.

  • China's Nationality Law does not recognise dual nationality. Article 9 provides that a Chinese citizen who settles abroad and voluntarily acquires a foreign nationality automatically loses Chinese nationality. In strict law, this includes acquiring a Caribbean passport by investment.
  • In practice, enforcement is inconsistent, since China has no systematic mechanism to detect a citizen's foreign naturalisation abroad, and many Caribbean passport holders continue to use a Chinese passport without incident. Treat this as a real, if often unenforced, legal risk, not a settled dual-citizenship right.
  • Golden visas avoid this conflict entirely, since they are foreign residence permits rather than a competing citizenship. This is a major reason Chinese demand for Portugal and Greece has stayed strong even as Caribbean citizenship has grown pricier since the 2024 regional price increases.
  • None of the four Caribbean programs bans Chinese applicants on nationality grounds, though several apply enhanced due diligence to politically exposed persons and to fund sources tied to mainland Chinese state enterprises or restricted sectors.
  • China's capital controls, the $50,000 per year individual foreign exchange conversion quota, and separate scrutiny of larger outbound transfers, are usually the single biggest practical obstacle to funding any program at this budget level. Most applicants use pre-existing offshore funds, a Hong Kong or Singapore corporate structure, or multi-year planning.
  • A foreign passport or residence permit does not by itself change your PRC tax residency or reporting obligations under China's own rules.

How the process runs with us

  1. You tell us the goal, EU or UAE residency, or a specific reason for Caribbean citizenship such as the E-2 treaty angle, over WhatsApp.
  2. For Portugal, Greece or UAE, we coordinate with a licensed local fund manager or property lawyer. None of the three carries a Caribbean-style mandatory agent requirement, but using a licensed professional is standard practice.
  3. For Caribbean citizenship, all four programs legally require a government-authorized agent of record. Gold Visa World is an advisory desk: we structure the file and coordinate with our licensed agent partners, who hold that status; we are not the licensed agent ourselves.
  4. We help you plan the funding route early, given China's $50,000 annual FX quota, usually through pre-existing offshore funds or an HK or Singapore structure rather than a direct mainland transfer.
  5. Due diligence and processing: enhanced due diligence is common for Chinese applicants at this budget, which can add real time; plan for it rather than being surprised by it.
  6. Permit or passport issued. If you chose Caribbean citizenship, we make sure you understand the automatic-loss position before, not after, the passport arrives.

Frequently asked questions

Do Chinese citizens automatically lose their citizenship by taking a Caribbean passport?

In strict law, yes. China's Nationality Law does not recognise dual nationality, and Article 9 provides for automatic loss of Chinese nationality when a citizen settles abroad and voluntarily takes a foreign nationality. Enforcement is inconsistent in practice, since China has no systematic way to detect foreign naturalisation abroad, but this is a real legal risk to weigh, not a right you can rely on.

Why do most Chinese clients choose Portugal or Greece instead of Caribbean citizenship?

Because a golden visa is a foreign residence permit, not a competing citizenship, so it never triggers the Nationality Law's automatic-loss provision. This is the main reason Chinese demand for Portugal and Greece golden visas has stayed strong even as Caribbean citizenship programs have grown more expensive since 2024.

How do Chinese nationals fund a €500,000 or larger investment given the annual FX quota?

China's individual foreign exchange conversion quota is $50,000 per year, which does not cover a program at this budget on its own. Most applicants use funds already held offshore, a Hong Kong or Singapore corporate structure, or a multi-year plan built around the quota. We work through this with you before you commit to a program, not after.

Does enhanced due diligence apply differently to Chinese applicants?

Several Caribbean programs apply enhanced due diligence to politically exposed persons and to funds tied to mainland Chinese state enterprises or restricted sectors. It is standard, not a sign of a problem with your application, but it can add processing time, so we build it into the timeline from the start rather than treating it as a surprise.

The FX quota usually shapes the timeline more than the program choice does. Tell us both and we will map a realistic path.
